DIY Card Box Project

Hi everyone!

Welcome to OhEfuaye Studio! Today I have a fun DIY to share with you.

This past month one of my aunts’ celebrated their 40th birthday party and it was a blast. Every bit was perfect it included lots of sunshine, smiles, and of course lots of dancing!

My aunt assigned me the task of being the table seater/greeter at the beginning of the party. Essentially I welcomed her guests into the hall and directed them to their place seating.

Because this was my task I decided to tackle a DIY card box art challenge. I thought that this was a perfect gift/keepsake for my aunt on her special day and a fantastic way to put my DIY skills to the test.

In the end, I created this beautiful custom card box which was a beautiful addition to the hall and the perfect gift for my aunt!

Supplies:

  • Decorative cardboard boxes (2 different sizes)
  • Colored craft paper
  • Clear craft glue
  • Self-adhesive gemstones (I got 3 different types)
  • Scissors
  • Exacto knife
  • Ruler
  • Additional embellishments of your choice*

Time to create:

  • Prep (includes purchasing materials): 30 minutes (I advise to really try and use materials you have at home first)
  • DIY time: 1-2 hours (time varies depending on the complexity of design)

Instructions:

The first step is to glue the smaller box onto the bigger box. Before gluing the box’s together I outlined the perimeters of where I wanted to place the small box to ensure that it was aligned. I used the craft glue to cover the entire bottom of the small box to glue on to the cover of the bigger box.

After gluing the boxes together I started to embellish the boxes. This was my favorite part of the project because you can be as creative as you want!

For my box, I used silver, light gold, and red because this was the color scheme of the event.

The rhinestone embellishments that I used came in a double strand so I cut the think strand into 2 strands to use for both the big box and small box.

Tip*: When wrapping the strand around the boxes place the box sideways and smoothly wrap it around each edge to give it a clean finish look.

I also decided to use individual red/white gems to outline the perimeter of the box covers. This really helped to make the box pop and give it a custom look.

The next step after decorating the box I made my DIY paper flowers.

DIY Paper flowers:

I made paper roses for the box as an extra creative element to add to the box. I will have another blog post linked below on how I made these EASY DIY FLOWERS!!

Next, working from the inside of the card box I cut out the card slot. I cut the card slot in the middle of the smaller box. First, I used a pencil to outline the size and place of the slot. Then, I used my Exacto knife to cut through the box to make the cut-out.

Tip*: It is important to do this part very slowly because if the cut is sloppy its ruins the clean finish of the card box.

Finally, after doing the main part of the box it’s time to add some final touches. I added on some extra gems around the card slot and glued on the flowers. In addition, I added some gold letters along the middle of the smaller box that said: “JANET” (aunt’s name). This really gave the box a little extra personalized touch.

*A nice extra feature with this card box is that the celebrant can easily take the cover off to get the cards inside; instead of having to open the bottom of the box. This allows easier access to the card inside and lengthens the durability of the box.*

In All, this was the finished product of creating a DIY card box! Overall, I am really happy with how it turned out, and most importantly my aunt LOVED it!

I would totally recommend using this method to make a card box for any “party” occasion such as weddings or birthdays.

Till next time,

Efuaye
